This is the third Sharp Microwave/Convection oven I have purchased. The first, made in Japan, lasted 13 years. The second, made in Thailand, lasted over 9 years. We use the oven every day, at every meal. This one is also made in Thailand, and has several improvements over the previous two. The plasma display panel, which suffered from dimming of the most frequently-used segments, has been replaced with a brighter LED one. The metal turntable has been replaced with a tempered ceramic one. The old metal turntables blocked the microwaves from reaching the bottom of the food, and also drew heat away from it, preventing microwave popcorn from popping unless the package was placed on a microwave-safe plate. Otherwise, the new oven is identical to the previous model. My only (very-minor) complaint is that while there are the same controls, the keypads are in different places. (24 years of muscle memory down the drain.)
Buying a combo convection oven has advantages even if you don't use the convection feature very much: it has tempered glass windows instead of plastic, and they can be cleaned repeatedly without scratching. Also, the perforated metal screen (that blocks microwaves from passing through the window) is much higher quality, with more holes, more closely spaced, so that it is easier to see through. (I don't know about Sharp's white model, but other white ovens I've seen have a white screen, which makes it much harder to see inside the oven from a brightly-lit room.)
Be aware that this oven is heavier than most microwave-only ones, and you may need help in moving it. It's almost all metal, except for the plastic trim on the front panel. The oven interior is stainless steel, so there's no paint to wear through when cleaning it.
Expecting the same level of quality and value, we ordered the current new version from Sharp, essentially the same exact oven (but with newer austere keypad), now model number SMC1585BB (manufactured March 2017). The microwave worked fine, but in convection mode, the oven made loud rumbling sound, almost a low grinding sound. It only did this in convection mode, and seemed to be a loose mounting of the convection circulation fan. So we returned it for a new replacement.
When we received the replacement (manufactured February of 2017), three things were immediately evident:
1)Start button would not work (how does a non-functional start button get past QA?). It was non-functional in both microwave and convection modes. You could select a time for the microwave, or temp and time for convection, you just could not get the oven to start. Kind of a deal breaker. So you could select how you wanted your food to be cooked, you just could not actually cook it.
2)The turntable started spinning as soon as the unit was plugged in...and would not stop unless the door was opened or the unit was unplugged. No cooking was possible, but the turntable spun continuously nonetheless.
3) The oven light stayed on all the time. It would not turn off. In fact, it was enough to heat the top outside surface of the oven to 146 degrees Fahrenheit in one spot.
Sharp was once an excellent product. But their day has come and gone. How do these defects make it past their Quality Assurance group? A loud rumbling sound during convection operation cannot be missed. A non-functional start button cannot be missed. It appears that there is NO QA check of their products before shipment. This is quite sad, and possibly even dangerous. Sharp's original products were so good, excellent even. But they are no longer what they once were. Their days are numbered, and they will almost certainly soon disappear from the commercial landscape.
