Customer reviews
Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

Out of box, ALL the parts are there and then some — the base unit, modular element, deep metal ‘underpan,’ nonstick grill w handles, nonstick griddle w handles, grease pan (also for water and Liquid Smoke), detachable clear lid w forward handle and hinge, 3-pronged power cord, Quick Start Guide, simple 11 page Owners Manual (w 60-day guarantee in back), 3 recipe pamphlets — America’s Favorite grilled-food favorites, America’s Favorite griddle breakfasts, and America’s Favorite Restaurants (including Outback Steakhouse and Applebees), and obligatory insert on arbitration. The unit is perfectly sized for 3-large-person entrees, many-people side servings, or Shabu Shabu grill fun. The unit and element are heavy duty. The grill and griddle have cast iron weight for their thickness (a good thing). The power cord is solid, though short. Think Maytag back in the old days. Or Speed Queen today.
So I assembled the unit, set it on a cleared counter near my commercial grade cooktop hood (on high), and plugged it in (I’ll wash food-contact parts later). I turned it to its highest setting and waited. The illuminated color dial actually indicated temperature progress. I wasn’t expecting that. Within a few minutes and using my Kizen IR thermometer surface gun, the grill actually measured 499 deg F in the center of the grill plate and less to the sides. Over the next few minutes, I retested sections of the grill plate, and temperatures seemed to even out across the surface at about 390-400 deg F. The unit’s fan turned on automatically. There was some initial chemical-smelling off-gassing which eventually abated. Because I value my cherry dining table, I tested the unit’s underside temperature. It measured 130-140 deg F. This is too hot to sit without protection on my table’s fine surface. A couple of wood or silicon boards should suffice.
I’ll update once I’ve cooked on it.
UPDATE: For our Shabu-shabu hot pot and grill debut, I used a large silicone board underneath the grill unit to protect my table surface. The power cord is so short, I had to use an indoor/outdoor extension cord to reach the nearest 3-prong outlet above the baseboard. We used it for about 3 hours of continuous highest-heat-setting (500 deg?) operation. Despite sharing a circuit with several other outlets, the amperage never tripped the circuit’s electric breaker. Grill surface performance was definitely a function of proximity to the underlying element. Meats and seafood (thinly-sliced Korean ribeye, cubed pork belly, whole prawns, tofu, Shiitake and Enoki mushrooms, other vegetables) in the center 2/3rds sizzled on contact whereas foods off-element rather simmered. The on-hinge lid was invaluable to contain and average overall heat. The internal fan worked, and came on and off intermittently. The heat disparity between near and far-to-element distance was similarly characteristic of the charcoal, gas, and propane grills I’ve owned. But even more fun for Shabu-shabu grilling tableside, where moving foods around for perfect doneness is a part of the overall experience. Paired with our Shabu-shabu two-sided hotpot, the feast was a great success.
Re cleanup, this appliance was trivial, if that can ever be said. Despite its many-hour workout, the lid, grill, pan, and water pan were trivial to clean in the sink with Dawn dishwashing detergent.
Final score: A++

2/19/22 Update: Cooked a steak tonight. Wow, so easy and so good! Got my new meat thermometer so that I could take off the grill at the desired temp without guessing so that helped me get the best results.
Simply put, it's very quick and easy to get up and running with this grill... it heats up in maybe 10 or 15 minutes, cooks fairly evenly, has a nice-sized grilling area and comes apart easily for quick cleanup. I came from a smaller/older George Foreman grill, which (for me) maxed-out at like 3 burgers, which smoked-up the house and was really too small for much of anything beyond... well, three burgers. The grilling size on the PowerXL grill handles up to about 6 good sized burgers, 6 chicken breasts and 3 to 4 good sized steaks.
For grilling, it does a pretty darn good job. The heat is good (up to 450f), is fairly consistent... if there's any difference, i'd say the right is a tad bit hotter than the left (and not by much at all), but all I do is reverse the placement of items "on the flip", so move things from right to left and vice-versa on the flip just to make sure (but I probably don't even need to do that, I just do). Overall i've never noticed any differences in my meat cooking by placement. The searing for that "grill look" is pretty good too... the attached pictures of chicken and steak are all immediately "after the flip". You can even dump toppings on the grill without worry, you can see I poured marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese on my parmesan chicken... the grilling service is non-stick. I don't even use anything special to prevent stickage.
As for the "smokeless" feature... yes, it works as advertised. There is a water tray on the bottom of the grill (slides out easy) that you put two cups of water in before cooking (you can add flavoring to the water if you want like liquid smoke), this is an important part of the smokeless feature, because any fat dripping off what you're grilling will end up in the water instead of on a heat element and causing smoke... there's also a fan that pulls air down and around the water tray that both eliminates smoke and cycles that "smoke" flavor along with helping keep the meat moist.
Finally for the cleaning, it all comes apart really easy... the glass lid just pops off, the grill plate has two little handles on either side that lifts off, the heating element is next and also lifts out (don't wash it), and below that is a metal drip pan and below that the water drawer. Everything is dishwasher safe (except the heating element obviously) and/or can be cleaned easily in the sink with a rag or soft brush (nothing abrasive, the non-stick is quite easy to clean). One last thing i'd like to mention about the cleaning, the way it's built the grill plate has grooves on the bottom where the heating element is completely covered and protected from the drain holes in the grill... so any grease/fat/toppings that drips down through the grill plate... none of it will come into contact with the heating element, so "hooray" the heating element stays clean every time. That's a well thought-out design feature that a lot of grills miss.
If there's a "complaint" to be had about the grill, its all the confusion about the "griddle plate"... it's basically the same as the grill plate, but doesn't have the drain holes in it and is a flatter surface... it's good for things like omelettes, pancakes, french toast, etc, etc. The plate itself is fine, no complaints, the problem is the "comes with" offers, both here on Amazon and even in your local stores. I bought mine off of Amazon, I've had friends buy them at local stores with names on the box like (Power XL Plus) and (Power XL Pro)... some say they come with a Griddle Plate (Power XL Pro) some say they don't (Power XL Plus). The catch is, none of them come with a griddle plate in the box. None that i've ever seen. The ones that say it comes with a Griddle Plate, doesn't actually come with one, it just has a leaflet in the box that says "go to powerxlgriddledotcom to order your *Free griddle plate... just pay $17 shipping and handling". There's no verification of grill serial numbers or anything, so anybody can just go to the website and order a *Free griddle plate for $17, but in my book, $17 ain't free... and here's the rub... I could have ordered a cheaper version of the grill and then ordered the *Free griddle plate for $17. Ya, you guessed it, I ordered on Amazon the version that "come with the griddle plate" but all I got was a leaflet in my box saying how to get my *Free griddle plate. Apparently, after reading multiple reviews, i'm not the only guy who ordered the "with griddle plate" and just got a leaflet for a *Free one inside.
Overall, i'm very happy with the grill... 5-stars for the grill itself, but I deduct one star for the *Free griddle that costs an extra $17 to get. I'm not sure if I really blame the shipper for this, the box clearly states "Free Griddle Offer Inside", its not till you open up the box and it says *Free with $17 shipping and handling... so maybe just blame PowerXL for shifty marketing. Great grill, smoke free, cooks great, spacious grilling surface... just watch out for the *Free griddle plate shenanigans.
