Our last one was the predecessor of this one -- 1.5 cu.ft. and 900W. I would have liked a larger one with more power. The really big, powerful ones were the kind that go in range hoods over cook tops. I only found one other brand which had more size and power, but it also cost like 50%+ more and my Vice President of Finance (aka: "wife") decided to stay with this model, even though our last one blew up after 4 years.
Oddly enough, it is more powerful than the old one which had the same 900W rating. We've had to adjust our cooking times down about 5-10%. Reference point: cooking a snack-size popcorn bag (1) takes 2:34 - easy to remember.
It seems to me that it makes a harsh grind-y sound when it's cooking. Guess we'll see how long it lasts.
Edit -- One year later (9/26/2019)
The door's push-pad doesn't work well after using the convection function. Apparently the extended heat is doing something to it since it works fine when just microwaving. It's kind of scary when the food in the hot oven is done and the door won't open.
The worse part is that a company we had used in the past to repair an older version of this microwave refuses to work on anything from Sharp anymore. The only other repair outfit we could find in our area of the state charges $100 just to come out and look at it. If they spend 2 minutes looking at it and say it can't be fixed, we're just out $100. If it can be fixed, then the parts and labor are on top of the $100. Too bad nobody else seems to make a comparable (and black) convection-microwave.
Expecting the same level of quality and value, we ordered the current new version from Sharp, essentially the same exact oven (but with newer austere keypad), now model number SMC1585BB (manufactured March 2017). The microwave worked fine, but in convection mode, the oven made loud rumbling sound, almost a low grinding sound. It only did this in convection mode, and seemed to be a loose mounting of the convection circulation fan. So we returned it for a new replacement.
When we received the replacement (manufactured February of 2017), three things were immediately evident:
1)Start button would not work (how does a non-functional start button get past QA?). It was non-functional in both microwave and convection modes. You could select a time for the microwave, or temp and time for convection, you just could not get the oven to start. Kind of a deal breaker. So you could select how you wanted your food to be cooked, you just could not actually cook it.
2)The turntable started spinning as soon as the unit was plugged in...and would not stop unless the door was opened or the unit was unplugged. No cooking was possible, but the turntable spun continuously nonetheless.
3) The oven light stayed on all the time. It would not turn off. In fact, it was enough to heat the top outside surface of the oven to 146 degrees Fahrenheit in one spot.
Sharp was once an excellent product. But their day has come and gone. How do these defects make it past their Quality Assurance group? A loud rumbling sound during convection operation cannot be missed. A non-functional start button cannot be missed. It appears that there is NO QA check of their products before shipment. This is quite sad, and possibly even dangerous. Sharp's original products were so good, excellent even. But they are no longer what they once were. Their days are numbered, and they will almost certainly soon disappear from the commercial landscape.
